Rugby Africa President Herbert Mensah to Vie for World Rugby Executive Council Elections

Herbert Mensah, President of Rugby Africa, is set to contest the World Rugby Executive Council elections, scheduled for Thursday, November 14, 2024, in Dublin, Ireland ¹. Mensah, a seasoned businessman and sports administrator, will run as a Regional Association Member, nominated by Rugby Africa and seconded by South Africa Rugby.

Mensah faces stiff competition from Asia Rugby’s Qais Al-Dhalai and Oceania Rugby’s Richard Sapias. In a recent statement, Mensah emphasized his commitment to representing both Africa’s interests and the global rugby community. “I think that I absolutely represent Africa and the interests of Africa. But I also represent the interests of global rugby,” he said.

With over two decades of experience in media, telecommunications, Ghanaian football, and philanthropy, Mensah is optimistic about inspiring change within the sport. Before becoming Rugby Africa President in March 2023, he served as Ghana Rugby’s president.

The World Rugby Chair candidates include

Abdelatif Benazzi (France), nominated by France and seconded by South Africa

Andrea Rinaldo (Italy), nominated by Italy and seconded by Ireland

Brett Robinson (Australia), nominated by Australia and seconded by England

While Mensah refrained from openly endorsing a candidate, he acknowledged Rugby Africa’s close affiliation with Benazzi, citing his African heritage and impressive rugby career.

The election outcome and the new World Rugby Executive Board will be announced after the Interim Meeting on Thursday night.
