The European Championship won by Spain in Berlin served as a showcase for many Spanish players, who quickly increased their value and were followed by big European teams. Mikel Merino, who despite not being a starter, was one of the players to watch. However, the 28-year-old was already doing great things at Real Sociedad.

With a contract until 2025, his departure was one of the possible consequences for the La Liga outfit. Arsenal were the best-placed team to secure his services, ahead of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, among others.

Merino has signed a four-year contract with the Gunners, which runs until 2028, while the Premier League side have paid a fee of around 32 million euros for his transfer plus five million euros in variable payments.

“Mikel is a player who will bring us huge quality with his experience and versatility. He has played at the top of the game at both club and international level for some seasons now. Mikel will make our squad significantly stronger, with his technical ability, together with his strong and positive character and personality,” Arteta said.

The midfielder returns to the Premier League, where he spent the 2017/18 campaign with Newcastle, after six seasons at Real Sociedad. Merino bids farewell to his former home with 242 appearances and 27 goals to his name.
