Meet Ghana’s New Acting GRA Commissioner-General, Anthony Kwasi Sarpong

Ghana’s revenue administration is set for a major transformation with the appointment of Anthony Kwasi Sarpong as the Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). According to a publication by Brand Focus Africa, Mr. Sarpong is a seasoned finance and taxation expert with nearly three decades of experience in finance, taxation, and public sector reforms. His extensive background in the private sector, particularly in audit and risk management, positions him as a strategic leader to drive Ghana’s tax administration forward.

A Storied Career in Finance and Taxation

Born and raised in Ghana, Anthony Kwasi Sarpong has built a distinguished career in finance, taxation, and risk management. He is an alumnus of the University of Ghana Business School, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Administration (Accounting) in 1996. He further pursued an MSc in Financial Risk Management from London Metropolitan University and attended executive programs at the London Business School and Harvard University.

Professionally, Mr. Sarpong is a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Tax Practitioner, with fellowships at the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG) and memberships with the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Ghana (CITG) and the Ghana Association of Restructuring and Insolvency Advisors (GARIA).

A Proven Track Record at KPMG

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Sarpong spent a significant part of his career at KPMG Ghana, rising to the role of Country Managing Partner. His leadership also extended to KPMG Africa, where he played a crucial role in regional finance and taxation strategies.

During his time at KPMG, he spearheaded major projects in audit, assurance, risk management, and restructuring, strengthening the firm’s position as a leader in financial consultancy. His expertise in corporate finance and taxation made him a trusted voice in Ghana’s economic and financial sector.

Leadership Beyond the Boardroom

Beyond his corporate achievements, Mr. Sarpong has played a key role in several high-impact national and international initiatives, particularly in Ghana’s financial sector. He was instrumental in developing Ghana’s first road financing framework, which aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

His work with the World Bank and other global development partners has also contributed to support frameworks for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). In Ghana, his role in shaping domestic revenue mobilization policies under the Ministry of Finance has been critical in improving tax compliance and revenue collection efficiency.

Mr. Sarpong’s appointment is in line with President Mahama’s vision for a technology-driven, transparent, and efficient tax administration system. His extensive experience in organizational restructuring, taxation, and digital solutions makes him the ideal candidate to implement transformative changes within the GRA.

Having led over 500 professionals at KPMG Ghana and contributing to the leadership of 6,500 personnel across Africa, he is well-equipped to execute critical reforms within the GRA.

Outside his professional life, Mr. Sarpong is passionate about youth empowerment and community development. As Chairman of the Ghana ENACTUS Board, he has mentored young entrepreneurs and supported business innovation among Ghana’s future leaders.

Additionally, he serves as the President of the 1996 University of Ghana Business School Alumni Association, actively supporting educational initiatives. His commitment to mentorship and professional development has earned him recognition as a leader dedicated to shaping the next generation of financial experts and entrepreneurs.
