The Minority Caucus in Parliament is pushing for the arrest and prosecution of the Directors of Lamens Investment Limited, following the alleged distribution of expired rice across the country, especially in Senior High Schools.
Additionally, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus has also demanded the Board and Management of the National Buffer Stock Company Limited to be sanctioned for the role they played, in what was described as a despicable act.
The Directors of Lamens Investment Limited as well as the Management of the Buffer Stock Company, the minority claims have allegedly supervised the repackaging and distribution of 22,000 bags of unwholesome and expired rice across the country.
This action, health experts say put the health of consumers in jeopardy but no action has been taken against the perpetrators.
Addressing the press on Monday, led by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the minority insisted that it would be an injustice for the state to allow these persons to go scot-free after committing such a heinous crime.
“President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia cannot remain silent on this grave matter which jeopardizes the health of millions of Ghanaian students. The nation is looking up to them to offer leadership, punish culprits who are largely their appointees, and implement reforms to ensure the safety of our children,” the Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu stated.
He added, “The NDC caucus also demands the immediate arrest and prosecution of the directors of Lamens Investment Africa Limited, Mr. Agyefi Mensah and Simon Agyei. We demand their rearrest and prosecution. The board and management of the National Food Buffer Store Company must be sanctioned for allowing their storage facility to be used for this atrocious act and for operating on registered storage facilities across the country.”
“Such recklessness, which sacrifices the health of our students for corruption transactions, must not go unpunished,” he remarked.
Furthermore, the Minority called for a probe of the Ministry of Education and the Ministers, whom they believe played a role that contributed to the act.
“The Ministry of Education must be probed for their conduct in this despicable affair. Not only for supervising this rot which severely endangers the health of SHS students but also their reported role, as alleged by Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) officials, that they piled undue pressure to get the FDA to back off,” the Minority further stated.
