Former CAF President Issa Hayatou Dies at 77 at Paris during Olympics 2024

Issa Hayatou also served as FIFA interim President from October 2015 to February 2016 following Sepp Blatter’s suspension.

Born in Cameroon in 1946, the former footballer was towering figure who left an indelible mark on the sport. His time at CAF saw the expansion of the Africa Cup of Nations, the inclusion of more African teams in the FIFA World Cup, and the strengthening of football infrastructure across Africa.

The former President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has passed away at the age of 77.

His death was confirmed by a close associate who served as his right-hand man during his tenure as CAF President, marking the end of an era for the continent’s longest-serving football leader.

He passed away on Thursday in Paris, reported Cameroon media

Issa Hayatou led CAF as President for 29 years, until his departure in March 2017, when Ahmad Ahmad took the reins.

He also served as FIFA interim President from October 2015 to February 2016 following Sepp Blatter’s suspension.

Under his watch, the FIFA elections were held, resulting in the election of Gianni Infantino as the new president. Hayatou’s CAF presidency saw the expansion of the Africa Cup of Nations, more African teams in the World Cup, and improved football infrastructure across the continent. It was a turbulent period for the organisation, but he managed to steer it through a crucial period with his characteristic calm and authority.

Condolences have poured in from around the globe following news of his passing, with many acknowledging the important role he played in transforming African football into a force to be reckon with on the world stage.
